(Pocket-lint) - Messages is Apple's messaging app available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac, but it isn't just for SMS messages and iMessages, there are a multitude of features within the app. In the meantime, I decided to take three third-party text-messaging apps for a run to see if there is something I like using more than Messages—although Apple's restrictions on SMS and messaging.
SMS & MMS Text Messages on macOS & Windows via a native, beautiful desktop app Message Classic 1.7.5 The stock messaging & caller ID app with native Android design. Go to Settings Messages and turn on Send as SMS. This ensures the Messages app will switch to text messages whenever you or the recipient aren’t online. Sometimes there’s a delay while your iPhone attempts to send an iMessage, but after a failed attempt it sends the message as a text instead. That said, you can always speed the process along. IMessage apps leverage the full framework to interact with the Messages app. Note An iMessage app linked on or after iOS 10.0 must include usage description keys for the device features it needs to access in its Info.plist file, or it will crash.

Since the Messages app can't be removed from your device, it must be hidden on another Home screen or in one of your folders. You can search for the Messages app first to ensure that it can be located and it's working properly:
Use Search on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Next, check all Home screen pages by swiping to the left on your main Home screen. Please also check all folders to see if it is hidden. If you're unable to locate the app this way, you may need to reset the Home screen layout by navigating to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout. This will move everything back to its default location and move all apps out of folders.
